Web 1, 2, and 3

So what are these numbers in reference to the world wide web, and what do they mean?  I first wrote about it this back in 2007 when I conducted a conference break out session on various Web 2.0 tools and the potential change in the internet landscape.  Nearly 10 years later, we have seen an explosion of Web 2.0 and the integration of Web 3.0 tools and people are more connected and engaged in the online world than ever before.

Web 1:  Sharing information

"Web 1.0 refers to the first stage in the World Wide Web, which was entirely made up of Web pages connected by hyperlinks. Although the exact definition of Web 1.0 is a source of debate, it is generally believed to refer to the Web when it was a set of static websites that were not yet providing interactive content."

Reference

Web 1.0  Sharing of static information (i.e. Webpages).

Web 2:  Interaction

Web 2 refers to "the second stage of development of the World Wide Web, characterized especially by the change from static web pages to dynamic or user-generated content and the growth of social media."

Web 2.0:  Interaction

Web 3:  Server Interacting with User

Web 3.0 or Semantic Web combines the virtues of Web 1.0 and 2.0 by adding machine intelligenceRecommending information, for example.  Notice how Facebook and Amazon seems to intuitively suggest what you may be looking for?  This "behind-the-scenes" artificial intelligence is Web 3.0.
